The Issue
So, Saturday morning I heard my husband cleaning in the living room. He doesn’t usually do a lot of cleaning in the house. We made a pact when we got married 12 years ago that I would handle all things inside, and he would handle all things outside. We pretty much stick to that. I do all of the cooking and cleaning and decorating. He does all the yard work, house repairs and maintenance, and takes care of all the cars. So to hear him cleaning, I knew something was up.
You see, my husband is an old fashioned, traditional cleaner. He grew up with 4 siblings, and on Saturday morings, his mom would get them all up to clean the house from top to bottom. I, on the other hand, grew up as an only child. My mom did most of the cleaning, and I was only responsible for cleaning my bedroom and bathroom and washing dishes.
Tidying vs. Cleaning
As my husband is cleaning, he starts moving furniture and talking to our 11 year old son about keeping his area of the front room clean. At the moment, we are living in a 3 bedroom house with our three sons. The oldest obviously gets his own room, but the younger two (ages 16 and 10 at the time we moved) did not want to share. So, we let the middle son have the other bedroom and set up a “bedroom” are for our 10 year old with his bed, a desk, desk chair, and dresser. It’s a nice area, but it is blended in with the living room space.
The front room space is also not as big as a previous home’s living room, and we also had a separate eat in kitchen and dining room in our previous home. So, in addition to our son’s “bedroom” space, we also have a sectional sofa, a small dining room table set from Ikea, as well as other small pieces of furniture. Keeping this area tidy is not a big issue. However, for my husband who grew up cleaning the house from top to bottom every week, surface tidying is not enough. When he cleans, he moves the furniture all around, cleans behind everything and does it on a large scale. He works as a building engineer for the school system and manages a cleaning crew at one of our city’s major hospitals at night, so cleaning (I mean really cleaning) is his thing.
Tidying Tools
When it comes to cleaning tools at my house, my favorite is my Shark VacMop Pro. It has a sleek, cordless design. It’s easy to transport around the house, and comes with disposable pads that you throw away after each cleaning. It doesn’t require a bucket of water because withe the push of a button, you can spray a solution to wet clean the floor. I absolutely love it! I just buy new disposable mop pads, and I am ready to go. I usually pick some up at Walmart, but Amazon also has some that are compatible with the Shark VacMop Pro and are a more economical purchase. You can get those here.
Other tools that I use for tidying my home are detailed below.
- Swifter Duster Kit This seemed to be a game changer for me. Gone were the days of spraying furniture polish and wiping everyting down. This little tool with its flexible wand, and full duster is perfect for cleaning dust from all spaces and areas in your home. I litterally hate dusting! But this makes it easier. And not to mention it’s easy to use, so little ones can quickly catch on to how to help with household chores. You can get the Swifer Duster Heavy Duty Dusting Kit here.
- Swifter 2-in-1 Mop This is one to greatest tools. It allows me to sweep up the floor and dust the floor at the same time. We don’t have any carpet in our home, so dust just falls to the floor and settles then flies around. For sweeping, my traditional husband sticks to a broom and dustpan. He is very open about the fact that he does not like my floor cleaning tools. However, I love that the trash does not fly around and escape while I am cleaning when I use the Swifter dry mop sheets. It’s so easy and convenient. It’s also great for cleaning up small spills or spots using the wet pads. You can get your Swifter mop here.
- Shark Steam Mop When it comes to sanitizing my floors, I use the Shark Steam Mop. It allows you to use steam instead of harsh, unsafe chemicals to clean your hard surface floors effortlessly. It comes with washable pads that you use over and over. It’s also compact and easy to use. Get your Shark Steam Mop here.
